Fifteen Sermons Preached at the Rolls Chapel

Joseph Butler (1692–1752) was an English Anglican bishop, theologian, and moral philosopher, serving as bishop of Bristol and then of Durham. Preaching at the Rolls Chapel in London, he produced the Fifteen Sermons (1726), famous for their teaching on conscience and human nature. His Analogy of Religion (1736), also in our library, answered the deists by arguing that revealed religion matches the pattern of God's government seen in nature.

About this book

Joseph Butler's Fifteen Sermons, preached at the Rolls Chapel and published in 1726, examine human nature and the moral constitution God has given it. Butler gives conscience the governing place, distinguishes self-love from benevolence, and answers accounts of morality that reduce virtue to selfishness. Lucid, measured, and philosophically exact, the sermons remain a landmark of English moral theology.
