Friedrich Daniel Ernst Schleiermacher (1768–1834) was a German Reformed theologian, philosopher, and pastor in Berlin, where he helped found the university and taught for many years. His On Religion: Speeches to Its Cultured Despisers (1799) defended religion as feeling and intuition. His systematic work The Christian Faith reshaped Protestant theology, and his sermons were widely read; our library carries collections of both his speeches and sermons.

This English selection presents sermons by Friedrich Schleiermacher, the influential German theologian often called the father of modern liberal theology. In Wilson's translation, the sermons treat faith and the Christian life in Schleiermacher's characteristic reflective and feeling-centered manner. The volume is valuable both as preaching and as a primary source for understanding a theologian who reshaped modern Protestant thought.
