Hugh Latimer (c. 1487–1555) was an English Reformer whose plain, searching preaching made him the most popular preacher of the English Reformation. As Bishop of Worcester under Henry VIII and chaplain to Edward VI, he pressed for a Bible in English and preached boldly against corruption. Under Mary I he was burned at the stake at Oxford in 1555, and his sermons in our library preserve his voice.

About this book

Hugh Latimer's sermons display the plain speech and moral courage of the English Reformer who was burned for his faith under Queen Mary. Preaching directly from Scripture, Latimer rebukes corruption, calls rulers and people to repentance, and applies doctrine to ordinary callings. His homely illustrations and fearless tone made the sermons instruments of reform as well as records of it.
