The Beatitudes: An Exposition of Matthew 5:1-12

Thomas Watson (c. 1620–1686) was an English Puritan preacher, long minister at St Stephen's, Walbrook, in London, and one of the ejected ministers of 1662. Watson combined clear doctrine with vivid, memorable illustration and searching application. His Body of Divinity — sermons on the Westminster Shorter Catechism — together with The Beatitudes and The Ten Commandments, has kept him among the most readable of all the Puritan writers.

About this book

Thomas Watson's exposition of the Beatitudes, drawn from the opening of Christ's Sermon on the Mount in Matthew 5 and published in 1660. Watson takes each blessing in turn — poverty of spirit, mourning, meekness, hunger for righteousness — and draws out comfort and direction for daily life. It shows the Puritan preacher at his most clear, warm, and practical.
