The Upper Room: Being a Few Truths for the Times

John Charles Ryle (1816–1900) was an English evangelical clergyman who became the first bishop of Liverpool in 1880. Converted while at Oxford, he served country parishes for nearly forty years before his bishopric, preaching and writing in a plain, direct style. His Holiness, his Expository Thoughts on the Gospels, and works such as Old Paths and Practical Religion remain standard reading for evangelical Anglicans and far beyond.

About this book

A collection of addresses by J. C. Ryle, first published in 1888, dealing plainly with the pressing religious questions of his day. Ryle warns against error and spiritual decline while calling readers back to the old paths of biblical truth, personal holiness, and earnest faith. His direct, no-nonsense style made him one of Victorian England's clearest evangelical voices.
