Sermons on Faith and Doctrine

Benjamin Jowett (1817–1893) was an English classical scholar and master of Balliol College, Oxford, for over twenty years. Famous as a translator of Plato and Thucydides and as a reformer of Oxford, he was also an ordained clergyman whose theological essays sought to restate Christian belief for the modern mind. Our library holds his commentaries on Paul's epistles and several volumes of his sermons and theological essays.

About this book

Benjamin Jowett's posthumous sermons gather addresses by the Oxford scholar and Master of Balliol on faith, doctrine, and the conduct of the Christian life. Published in 1901 after his death, they reflect the literary clarity and broad theological temper for which Jowett was known. The volume preserves the pulpit voice of an influential Victorian churchman and university teacher.
