Benjamin Jowett (1817–1893) was an English classical scholar and master of Balliol College, Oxford, for over twenty years. Famous as a translator of Plato and Thucydides and as a reformer of Oxford, he was also an ordained clergyman whose theological essays sought to restate Christian belief for the modern mind. Our library holds his commentaries on Paul's epistles and several volumes of his sermons and theological essays.

A posthumous collection of dissertations by Benjamin Jowett, the influential Oxford scholar, published in 1893. The essays take up questions about Scripture, revelation, and religious truth as they were debated in the late Victorian church. Readers meet here one of the leading voices of nineteenth-century liberal biblical scholarship, writing with learning and characteristic independence of judgment.
