The Cell of Self-Knowledge: Seven Early English Mystical Treatises

Edmund Garratt Gardner (1869–1935) was an English scholar of Italian literature and one of the foremost British Dante scholars of his generation. He wrote studies of Dante and of Italian mysticism and edited The Cell of Self-Knowledge, an anthology of seven early English mystical treatises by writers such as Richard Rolle, Walter Hilton, and Julian of Norwich, which introduces readers to England's medieval contemplative tradition.

About this book

The Cell of Self-Knowledge gathers seven early English mystical treatises first printed together by Henry Pepwell in 1521, presented here in Edmund Gardner's modern edition. The treatises — by authors in the tradition of Richard Rolle and Walter Hilton — teach contemplative prayer, self-knowledge, and the soul's ascent to God. A compact anthology of England's medieval contemplative heritage.
