The Dolorous Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ

The Dolorous Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ

Anne Catherine Emmerich (1774–1824) was a German Augustinian canoness from a poor farming family in Westphalia. Bedridden for the last decade of her life, she reported visions of the lives of Christ and the Virgin Mary and bore marks said to resemble Christ's wounds. The poet Clemens Brentano sat at her bedside recording her accounts, published after her death as The Dolorous Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ and the Life of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

About this book

The Dolorous Passion records the meditations of Anne Catherine Emmerich, a German Augustinian nun and stigmatist, on the sufferings of Christ from the Last Supper to the Resurrection, as taken down by the poet Clemens Brentano and published in 1833. Its vivid, scene-by-scene detail has shaped popular imagination of the Passion for nearly two centuries.
