Bonaventure (1221–1274), born Giovanni di Fidanza, was an Italian Franciscan theologian and philosopher, known as the Seraphic Doctor. As seventh Minister General he steadied the Franciscan order in a generation of controversy, and he ended his career as a cardinal and bishop. The Mind's Road to God (Itinerarium), written on retreat at La Verna, traces the soul's ascent from creation's traces to contemplation of God himself.

Bonaventure's short treatise of 1259, often called the Itinerarium, describes the mind's journey into God. Starting from the traces of God in the created world and in the soul, it rises step by step toward contemplation of God as Being and as Goodness itself. Compact and carefully ordered, it is a classic meeting point of medieval theology and devotion.
