Treatise Written to a Devout Man

Treatise Written to a Devout Man

Walter Hilton (c. 1340–1396) was an English Augustinian canon and mystical writer. Little is known of his life beyond his association with the Augustinian canons at Thurgarton in Nottinghamshire, but his writings guided devout readers across fifteenth-century England. His chief work, The Scale of Perfection — represented in our library — directs the soul's reformation in the image of God through contemplative prayer.

About this book

A short treatise by the English contemplative Walter Hilton, written in the fourteenth century for a devout reader. Hilton gives measured counsel on prayer, temptation, and the ordering of the inner life, suited to someone pursuing devotion while living in the world. Brief and practical, it shows the same calm spiritual direction found in his larger Scale of Perfection.
