ANF05. Fathers of the Third Century: Hippolytus, Cyprian, Caius, Novatian, Appendix

Philip Schaff (1819–1893) was a Swiss-born church historian who taught at Mercersburg and later at Union Theological Seminary in New York. A bridge between German scholarship and the English-speaking church, he founded the American Society of Church History and edited vast reference works. Our library's Nicene and Post-Nicene Fathers series — which he conceived and edited — together with his History of the Christian Church and Creeds of Christendom, came largely through his labors.

About this book

The fifth volume of the Ante-Nicene Fathers, edited under Philip Schaff, presents Hippolytus, Cyprian of Carthage, and the fragments of Caius and Novatian. Cyprian's treatises and letters on the unity of the church and the lapsed are the heart of the volume. Essential sources for third-century church order and controversy.
