Philip Schaff (1819–1893) was a Swiss-born church historian who taught at Mercersburg and later at Union Theological Seminary in New York. A bridge between German scholarship and the English-speaking church, he founded the American Society of Church History and edited vast reference works. Our library's Nicene and Post-Nicene Fathers series — which he conceived and edited — together with his History of the Christian Church and Creeds of Christendom, came largely through his labors.

About this book

The eighth volume of the Ante-Nicene Fathers, edited under Philip Schaff, collects early apocryphal and pseudepigraphal writings: the Testaments of the Twelve Patriarchs, the Clementine literature, decretals, and Syriac documents. These texts were not received as Scripture, but they show what many early Christians read and believed. For careful, discerning study.
