Christian Nurture

Christian Nurture

Horace Bushnell (1802–1876) was an American Congregational minister and theologian. During pastorates in Hartford, Connecticut, he became one of the most influential religious thinkers of nineteenth-century America. His Christian Nurture argued that children of believers should grow up never knowing themselves to be anything but Christians, while his sermons and theological works sought fresh statements of faith for a changing age.

About this book

Horace Bushnell's influential book on the religious upbringing of children, first published in 1847. Bushnell argues that a child of Christian parents should grow up never remembering a time when he did not know himself to be a Christian, nurtured from infancy by the faith of the home. A landmark in American thinking about family religion and Christian education.
