The Character of Jesus

The Character of Jesus

Horace Bushnell (1802–1876) was an American Congregational minister and theologian. During pastorates in Hartford, Connecticut, he became one of the most influential religious thinkers of nineteenth-century America. His Christian Nurture argued that children of believers should grow up never knowing themselves to be anything but Christians, while his sermons and theological works sought fresh statements of faith for a changing age.

About this book

Horace Bushnell's portrait of the character of Jesus, published in 1861. Bushnell studies the Gospels' presentation of Christ — His wisdom, holiness, compassion, and moral grandeur — and offers that character itself as evidence for Christianity. Written in his characteristically rich prose, the book invites readers to contemplate who Jesus was, and not only what He taught or did.
