In His Steps

In His Steps

Charles Monroe Sheldon (1857–1946) was an American Congregational minister in Topeka, Kansas, and a leader of the Social Gospel movement. To reach his young people he read them a story in weekly chapters, asking at every turn what Jesus would do. Published in 1896, that story became In His Steps — in our library — one of the best-selling books of its era, and its question still shapes Christian decision-making.

About this book

Charles M. Sheldon's famous novel, first published in 1896. When a homeless stranger challenges a comfortable congregation, the pastor and several members pledge for a year to ask, before every decision, 'What would Jesus do?' The story traces what the pledge costs them in business, journalism, and society — and gave the church the enduring question behind WWJD.
