The Holy War

The Holy War

John Bunyan (1628–1688) was an English tinker turned Puritan preacher in Bedford. Largely self-educated, he was imprisoned for twelve years for preaching without a license, and it was in prison that he began The Pilgrim's Progress, published in 1678. His allegory, his spiritual autobiography Grace Abounding, and works such as The Holy War have made him one of the most read Christian authors in the world.

About this book

John Bunyan's second great allegory, first published in 1682. The town of Mansoul — the human soul — is taken by Diabolus, retaken by Prince Emanuel, and besieged again, in a story of conversion and of the continuing warfare of the Christian life. Less read than The Pilgrim's Progress, many readers judge it the richer allegory of the two.
