Sermons. Volume Third.

Henry Edward Manning (1808–1892) was an English churchman who became Archbishop of Westminster and a cardinal. Converted to Rome in 1851 after the Gorham judgment shook his confidence in the Church of England, he led English Catholicism for a generation, championing papal infallibility at Vatican I and social causes at home. Our library carries several volumes of his Sermons and his Grounds of Faith lectures.

About this book

This third volume of sermons by Henry Edward Manning, the nineteenth-century English churchman, turns on the great themes of his preaching: God's providence, the discipline of the soul, and the call to holiness. Each sermon is closely reasoned and quietly earnest, aimed less at display than at forming the conscience and strengthening the will in obedience to Christ.
