Grounds of Faith: Four Lectures

Henry Edward Manning (1808–1892) was an English churchman who became Archbishop of Westminster and a cardinal. Converted to Rome in 1851 after the Gorham judgment shook his confidence in the Church of England, he led English Catholicism for a generation, championing papal infallibility at Vatican I and social causes at home. Our library carries several volumes of his Sermons and his Grounds of Faith lectures.

About this book

Four lectures by Henry Edward Manning on the grounds of faith, delivered in 1852. Manning examines how faith rests on reason and evidence, and what place the authority of the church holds in believing. Written shortly after his reception into the Roman Catholic Church, the lectures show a careful, earnest mind commending the reasonableness of faith to doubters.
