James Petigru Boyce (1827–1888) was an American Baptist pastor and theologian who founded the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in 1859 and served as its first president and professor of theology. A Confederate chaplain and a tireless denominational organizer, he insisted the seminary hold fast to confessional orthodoxy. His Abstract of Systematic Theology (1887), in our library, was written as the seminary's textbook of doctrine.
