Paul Wernle (1872–1939) was a Swiss New Testament scholar who taught at the University of Basel, becoming full professor there in 1905. Trained at Basel, Berlin, and Göttingen, he wrote on the synoptic Gospels, Paul, and Christian origins from a historical-critical standpoint. Our library holds his Beginnings of Christianity, a two-volume survey of the earliest church and its teaching written for general readers as well as students.

The first volume of Paul Wernle's history of Christian origins, published in English in 1903. Wernle, a Swiss scholar of the history-of-religions school, traces the beginnings of the Christian movement in its ancient setting. A learned specimen of early twentieth-century critical scholarship on the New Testament and the primitive church.
