Beginnings of Christianity. Vol. II.

Paul Wernle (1872–1939) was a Swiss New Testament scholar who taught at the University of Basel, becoming full professor there in 1905. Trained at Basel, Berlin, and Göttingen, he wrote on the synoptic Gospels, Paul, and Christian origins from a historical-critical standpoint. Our library holds his Beginnings of Christianity, a two-volume survey of the earliest church and its teaching written for general readers as well as students.

About this book

The second volume of Paul Wernle's history of Christian origins, published in English in 1903. It continues his critical account of the early church's development, its institutions, worship, and theology. Read alongside the first volume, it shows how the history-of-religions school reframed the study of Christian beginnings.
