Philip Schaff (1819–1893) was a Swiss-born church historian who taught at Mercersburg and later at Union Theological Seminary in New York. A bridge between German scholarship and the English-speaking church, he founded the American Society of Church History and edited vast reference works. Our library's Nicene and Post-Nicene Fathers series — which he conceived and edited — together with his History of the Christian Church and Creeds of Christendom, came largely through his labors.

A volume of the Nicene and Post-Nicene Fathers series, edited by Philip Schaff, containing Augustine's exposition of the Psalms. Preached and dictated over many years, these enarrations read the psalter as the voice of Christ and his church, moving between doctrine, devotion, and searching application. They remain one of the fullest patristic commentaries on the church's prayer book.
