Christian Singers of Germany

Catherine Winkworth (1827–1878) was an English hymn translator and educator who opened the German chorale tradition to English-speaking churches. Her Lyra Germanica (1855) and later collections gave English versions — including 'Now thank we all our God' — to hundreds of German hymns. Christian Singers of Germany profiles the German hymn writers behind them. She also campaigned for wider educational opportunities for girls and women.

About this book

Catherine Winkworth's biographical sketches of Germany's hymn writers, published in 1869. Winkworth, the great translator of German hymnody into English, tells the stories of the poets and pastors behind the chorales, from the Reformation onward, and shows the settings of faith and suffering in which their songs were written. A useful companion to her translated collections.
