The Psalms and Hymns of Isaac Watts

The Psalms and Hymns of Isaac Watts

Isaac Watts (1674–1748) was an English Nonconformist minister known as the father of English hymnody. Dissatisfied with merely paraphrasing the Psalms, he wrote hymns of his own — 'When I Survey the Wondrous Cross', 'Joy to the World', and 'O God, Our Help in Ages Past' — that are still sung everywhere. He also wrote a widely used Logic and works of theology and devotion found in our library.

About this book

The combined Psalms and Hymns of Isaac Watts, the father of English hymnody. His Psalms of David Imitated (1719) recast the Psalter in New Testament language, while his hymns — 'When I Survey the Wondrous Cross' and 'Joy to the World' among them — set a new pattern for congregational song. Together they form the foundation of modern English hymn singing.
