Catherine Winkworth (1827–1878) was an English hymn translator and educational reformer. Working from the rich heritage of German Lutheran chorales, she published Lyra Germanica (1855 and 1858), which introduced dozens of German hymns to English congregations in singable verse. She also compiled The Chorale Book for England (1863), represented in this library. Winkworth spent her later years campaigning for better educational opportunities for girls and young women in England.

Catherine Winkworth's Chorale Book for England, published in 1863. Prepared with musical collaborators, it brought the great German chorales — their tunes as well as their words — into English use, in Winkworth's own translations. The book marks the moment when the Lutheran chorale tradition began to take a lasting place in English hymn singing.
