James Montgomery (1771–1854) was a Scottish poet and hymn writer, the son of Moravian missionaries who died on the West Indies mission field while he was at school. He edited the Sheffield Iris newspaper for some thirty years and was twice briefly imprisoned for his reforming editorials. His nearly four hundred hymns include 'Angels from the Realms of Glory', 'Hail to the Lord's Anointed', and 'Go to dark Gethsemane'.
