Charles Sumner Nutter (1842–1928) was an American Methodist minister and hymnologist. A graduate of Boston University's School of Theology, he spent his career in New England pastorates while collecting the stories behind the church's hymns. His Hymn Studies (1884) and Historic Hymnists (1893) led to The Hymns and Hymn Writers of the Church (1911), co-edited with Wilbur F. Tillett — the biographical treasury excerpted in our library.

A handbook of short biographies of hymn writers, compiled by Charles S. Nutter and published in 1911. Arranged for ready reference, it gives the essential facts about the authors behind the church's hymns, from the early centuries to Nutter's own day. It serves singers and students who want to know whose words they are singing and the lives from which the hymns came.
