Divine and Moral Songs for Children

Isaac Watts (1674–1748) was an English Nonconformist minister known as the father of English hymnody. Dissatisfied with merely paraphrasing the Psalms, he wrote hymns of his own — 'When I Survey the Wondrous Cross', 'Joy to the World', and 'O God, Our Help in Ages Past' — that are still sung everywhere. He also wrote a widely used Logic and works of theology and devotion found in our library.

About this book

Isaac Watts's songbook for children, first published in 1715 — among the earliest hymnals written expressly for the young. Its short, singable verses teach the great truths of Scripture and the duties of a godly life: gratitude, honesty, obedience, and kindness to creatures. Simple in language and firm in doctrine, it shaped the religious imagination of generations of English-speaking children.
