Eight Sermons Preached at the Boyle Lecture, 1692

Richard Bentley (1662–1742) was an English classical scholar and Anglican clergyman, Master of Trinity College, Cambridge, and the founder of modern historical philology. In 1692 he delivered the first Boyle Lectures — the Eight Sermons in our library — defending the Christian faith against atheism from the order of nature. His Dissertation on the Epistles of Phalaris (1699) remains a landmark of textual criticism.

About this book

Eight sermons by Richard Bentley, preached as the first Boyle Lectures in 1692 in defense of the Christian religion. Drawing on the new natural philosophy of his day, Bentley argues from the order and frame of the world to the existence and wisdom of God, answering the atheism of the age. A landmark where theology met the rising science of Newton.
