Adolf von Harnack (1851–1930) was a Baltic German Lutheran theologian and the most famous church historian of his generation. Professor at Berlin, he traced Christianity's development in his monumental History of Dogma and popularized its 'essence' as the fatherhood of God and the brotherhood of man. Our library carries several volumes of his History of Dogma and his Essays on the Social Gospel — primary documents of liberal Protestant scholarship.

Adolf von Harnack's History of Dogma, in English translation: a vast account of how the doctrines of the church developed from the apostolic age onward. This is volume one of the work. Harnack, the leading church historian of liberal Protestantism, traces the formation of dogma with immense learning, though from a standpoint many readers will judge critically.
