Hymns from the Land of Luther

Hymns from the Land of Luther

Jane Laurie Borthwick (1813–1897) was a Scottish translator of German hymns from Edinburgh who published under the initials H. L. L. Working with her sister Sarah, she produced Hymns from the Land of Luther (1854 and after), which carried German chorales into English worship; her finest translation, 'Be still, my soul', is still sung worldwide. She also gave generously to home and foreign missions.

About this book

A collection of German hymns in English translation by Jane Borthwick, first published in 1854. Drawn from the rich chorale tradition of Lutheran Germany, the hymns range across the church year and the experiences of the Christian life. Borthwick's versions helped make the devotional poetry of Luther's homeland familiar and singable in Victorian Britain.
