Lyra Germanica: The Christian Year

Lyra Germanica: The Christian Year

Catherine Winkworth (1827–1878) was an English translator who brought the German chorale tradition into English worship. Raised in a family sympathetic to German theology, she published Lyra Germanica in 1855 and the second series, The Christian Life, in 1858, followed by The Christian Year in 1863 — the two series held in our library. Her singable versions of German hymns shaped English hymnals for generations; she also championed wider education for girls.
