Philip Schaff (1819–1893) was a Swiss-born church historian who taught at Mercersburg and later at Union Theological Seminary in New York. A bridge between German scholarship and the English-speaking church, he founded the American Society of Church History and edited vast reference works. Our library's Nicene and Post-Nicene Fathers series — which he conceived and edited — together with his History of the Christian Church and Creeds of Christendom, came largely through his labors.

A further volume of the Nicene and Post-Nicene Fathers series, edited by Philip Schaff, completing its selection from Gregory the Great. It adds the hymns and discourses of Ephraim the Syrian and writings of Aphrahat, the early Persian sage. Together these texts open a window on the Syriac-speaking church of the fourth century and its rich tradition of poetry and exhortation.
