Philip Schaff (1819–1893) was a Swiss-born church historian who taught at Mercersburg and later at Union Theological Seminary in New York. A bridge between German scholarship and the English-speaking church, he founded the American Society of Church History and edited vast reference works. Our library's Nicene and Post-Nicene Fathers series — which he conceived and edited — together with his History of the Christian Church and Creeds of Christendom, came largely through his labors.

A volume of the Nicene and Post-Nicene Fathers series, edited by Philip Schaff, containing Augustine's City of God and his treatise On Christian Doctrine. In the first, Augustine answers pagan critics after the sack of Rome and sets the city of God over against the city of man. In the second, he teaches how Scripture is to be read and taught.
