Philip Schaff (1819–1893) was a Swiss-born church historian who taught at Mercersburg and later at Union Theological Seminary in New York. A bridge between German scholarship and the English-speaking church, he founded the American Society of Church History and edited vast reference works. Our library's Nicene and Post-Nicene Fathers series — which he conceived and edited — together with his History of the Christian Church and Creeds of Christendom, came largely through his labors.

A volume of the Nicene and Post-Nicene Fathers series, edited by Philip Schaff, gathering Augustine's work On the Trinity together with his doctrinal and moral treatises. Here Augustine reflects at length on the triune God and addresses questions of faith, practice, and the Christian life. The volume shows the bishop of Hippo as both theologian and pastor of souls.
