Philip Schaff (1819–1893) was a Swiss-born church historian who taught at Mercersburg and later at Union Theological Seminary in New York. A bridge between German scholarship and the English-speaking church, he founded the American Society of Church History and edited vast reference works. Our library's Nicene and Post-Nicene Fathers series — which he conceived and edited — together with his History of the Christian Church and Creeds of Christendom, came largely through his labors.

A volume of the Nicene and Post-Nicene Fathers series, edited by Philip Schaff, containing John Chrysostom's homilies on the Gospel of Matthew. Preached at Antioch, these sermons work steadily through the first Gospel, explaining the text and pressing its moral demands on rich and poor alike. They are a prime example of Chrysostom's verse-by-verse preaching to a city congregation.
