Philip Schaff (1819–1893) was a Swiss-born church historian who taught at Mercersburg and later at Union Theological Seminary in New York. A bridge between German scholarship and the English-speaking church, he founded the American Society of Church History and edited vast reference works. Our library's Nicene and Post-Nicene Fathers series — which he conceived and edited — together with his History of the Christian Church and Creeds of Christendom, came largely through his labors.

A volume of the Nicene and Post-Nicene Fathers series, edited by Philip Schaff, gathering John Chrysostom's homilies on the Acts of the Apostles and on the Epistle to the Romans. The Acts sermons celebrate the Spirit-filled boldness of the first Christians, while the Romans homilies unfold Paul's gospel with Chrysostom's characteristic clarity and warmth of application.
