Philip Schaff (1819–1893) was a Swiss-born church historian who taught at Mercersburg and later at Union Theological Seminary in New York. A bridge between German scholarship and the English-speaking church, he founded the American Society of Church History and edited vast reference works. Our library's Nicene and Post-Nicene Fathers series — which he conceived and edited — together with his History of the Christian Church and Creeds of Christendom, came largely through his labors.

A volume of the Nicene and Post-Nicene Fathers series, edited by Philip Schaff, containing John Chrysostom's homilies on Paul's two Epistles to the Corinthians. Addressing a divided and gifted church, Chrysostom treats questions of unity, worship, discipline, and the resurrection. His sermons combine close attention to Paul's argument with direct, often bracing, counsel for congregational life.
