NPNF2-02. Socrates and Sozomenus Ecclesiastical Histories

Philip Schaff (1819–1893) was a Swiss-born church historian who taught at Mercersburg and later at Union Theological Seminary in New York. A bridge between German scholarship and the English-speaking church, he founded the American Society of Church History and edited vast reference works. Our library's Nicene and Post-Nicene Fathers series — which he conceived and edited — together with his History of the Christian Church and Creeds of Christendom, came largely through his labors.

About this book

A volume of the Nicene and Post-Nicene Fathers series, edited by Philip Schaff, presenting the ecclesiastical histories of Socrates and Sozomen. Writing in the fifth century, both men continued Eusebius's story through the age of the Arian controversy and the Christian emperors. Their parallel accounts preserve sermons, letters, and episodes that would otherwise be lost to the church.
