Philip Schaff (1819–1893) was a Swiss-born church historian who taught at Mercersburg and later at Union Theological Seminary in New York. A bridge between German scholarship and the English-speaking church, he founded the American Society of Church History and edited vast reference works. Our library's Nicene and Post-Nicene Fathers series — which he conceived and edited — together with his History of the Christian Church and Creeds of Christendom, came largely through his labors.

A volume of the Nicene and Post-Nicene Fathers series, edited by Philip Schaff, pairing Cyril of Jerusalem and Gregory Nazianzen. Cyril's catechetical lectures instruct new converts in the creed and the sacraments, while Gregory's orations and letters defend the doctrine of the Trinity with eloquence that earned him the title 'the Theologian' in the Eastern church.
