Philip Schaff (1819–1893) was a Swiss-born church historian who taught at Mercersburg and later at Union Theological Seminary in New York. A bridge between German scholarship and the English-speaking church, he founded the American Society of Church History and edited vast reference works. Our library's Nicene and Post-Nicene Fathers series — which he conceived and edited — together with his History of the Christian Church and Creeds of Christendom, came largely through his labors.

A volume of the Nicene and Post-Nicene Fathers series, edited by Philip Schaff, devoted to the seven ecumenical councils of the early church. It presents their decrees and canons, from Nicaea in 325 to the second council of Nicaea in 787, with historical introductions and notes. Here readers can consult the primary texts behind the church's confessions of Christ and the Trinity.
