Pseudepigrapha: Apocryphal Sacred Writings of the Jews and Early Christians

Pseudepigrapha: Apocryphal Sacred Writings of the Jews and Early Christians

William John Deane (1823–1895) was an English Anglican clergyman and biblical scholar. Educated at Oriel College, Oxford, he spent his ministry as rector of Ashen in Essex while writing on the literature between the Testaments. His commentary on the Book of Wisdom (1881) and his Pseudepigrapha (1891) — an account of apocryphal writings of the Jews and early Christians, the volume in our library — remain useful introductions to that literature.

About this book

A scholarly introduction by William J. Deane, published in 1891, to the apocryphal and pseudepigraphical writings produced by Jewish and early Christian authors. Deane surveys these books one by one, summarizing their contents and the questions surrounding their origin and date. It serves as a reference guide for readers who meet these non-canonical writings in the study of the biblical world.
