Sketches of Jewish Social Life

Alfred Edersheim (1825–1889) was an Austrian-born Jewish scholar who converted to Christianity and became a British biblical scholar and clergyman. Ordained in the Church of Scotland and later the Church of England, he lectured at Oxford on the Septuagint. He is best known for The Life and Times of Jesus the Messiah (1883), a rich account of Christ's world; our library also holds his Sketches of Jewish Social Life and The Temple.

About this book

Alfred Edersheim's sketches of Jewish social life in the days of Christ, first published in 1876. A scholar converted from Judaism, Edersheim describes homes, family customs, education, synagogue worship, and the trades of ordinary people. His aim throughout is to let the Gospels be read against the living background of the world in which Jesus and the apostles moved.
