The Death of Christ

The Death of Christ

James Denney (1856–1917) was a Scottish Free Church theologian and preacher, and principal of the Free Church College in Glasgow. Combining pulpit warmth with careful scholarship, he wrote chiefly on the cross: The Death of Christ sets out the atonement as the heart of the gospel. Our library also holds his Studies in Theology and The Christian Doctrine of Reconciliation, which continue the same theme.

About this book

James Denney's study of the death and atonement of Christ, first published in 1902. Denney works chiefly through the teaching of Paul, arguing that Christ's death is the heart of the Gospel and the ground of reconciliation between God and sinners. Clear and earnest, the book defends the centrality of the cross against attempts to reduce Christianity to teaching or example.
