Constantin von Tischendorf (1815–1874) was a German biblical scholar who devoted his life to recovering the oldest manuscripts of the New Testament. He deciphered the Codex Ephraemi palimpsest in Paris and, at St Catherine's Monastery on Mount Sinai, found the Codex Sinaiticus, the oldest complete New Testament known. Our library holds his popular defence of the Gospels' early date, When Were Our Gospels Written?, and his work on the origin of the four Gospels.

Constantin von Tischendorf's account of the origin of the four Gospels, published in English in 1874. Tischendorf, the celebrated discoverer and editor of early biblical manuscripts, argues from the manuscript evidence and early Christian testimony that the Gospels arose in the apostolic age. The book lets readers hear a great textual scholar explain why he trusted the antiquity of the Gospel record.
