William Garden Blaikie (1820–1899) was a Scottish Free Church minister who became professor of apologetics and ecclesiastical history at New College, Edinburgh. A respected writer and temperance reformer, he is best known for The Personal Life of David Livingstone (1880), the standard early biography of his friend the missionary-explorer, drawn largely from Livingstone's private journals and correspondence. Our library carries that work.

W. G. Blaikie's biography draws on David Livingstone's journals, letters, and family knowledge to present the Scottish missionary and African explorer in his personal as well as public character. It follows his missionary labor, journeys, hardships, faith, and final years in Africa. Published in 1880, it remains a full contemporary portrait of a man driven by Christian duty and compassion.
