Philip Schaff (1819–1893) was a Swiss-born church historian who taught at Mercersburg and at Union Theological Seminary in New York. When Ernest Renan's Life of Jesus denied the supernatural Christ, Schaff answered for the evangelical faith in The Romance of M. Renan, and the Christ of the Gospels (1865), the work listed here under his name with collaborators. His History of the Christian Church and the Nicene and Post-Nicene Fathers series anchor our history shelves.

A collection of essays published in 1865 answering Ernest Renan's famous Life of Jesus, in which Renan retold the Gospel story as romantic biography while denying its miracles. Philip Schaff and his fellow contributors defend the Christ of the Gospels against Renan's portrait, examining his method and evidence. It preserves an early evangelical response to a book that stirred Europe.
