The Theology of Schleiermacher

The Theology of Schleiermacher

George Cross (1862–1929) was a Baptist theologian who taught Christian theology at the Newton Theological Institution in Massachusetts. His classroom work introduced a generation of ministers to the theologians of the nineteenth century. He is best known for The Theology of Schleiermacher (1911) — the work in our library — a condensed presentation of Schleiermacher's The Christian Faith, with a sketch of its author's life and influence, long used as the standard English gateway to Schleiermacher.

About this book

George Cross's introduction to the theology of Friedrich Schleiermacher, published in 1911 as a secondary study of the father of modern liberal theology. Cross surveys Schleiermacher's life, his account of religion as the feeling of absolute dependence, and his reconstruction of Christian doctrine. It helps readers understand, from a sympathetic guide, a thinker whose influence still shapes modern theology.
