The Training of the Twelve

The Training of the Twelve

Alexander Balmain Bruce (1831–1899) was a Scottish Free Church theologian. After parish ministry at Cardross and Broughty Ferry, he became professor of apologetics and New Testament exegesis at the Free Church College in Glasgow, where he taught for twenty-four years. The Training of the Twelve (1871) — the work in our library — follows the disciples' education under Jesus; his later books include The Humiliation of Christ and The Kingdom of God.

About this book

A. B. Bruce's study of how Jesus prepared His twelve apostles for their work, first published in 1871. Following the Gospel record, Bruce traces the stages of their training — their calling, teaching, failures, and final preparation through the cross and resurrection. It is both a careful piece of New Testament study and a searching meditation on discipleship and ministry.
